Herring Scrap 24
Tales from the Channel Light...
The herring spawn in Sitka has been underway for a bit over a week now. I’ll tell you more about it some other day, but today I have a simple goal: I want to share a clutch of early 1960’s herring articles from Channel Light, the student newspaper of Mt. Edgecumbe High School; certain years of that publication were recently digitized by the National Archives.
These early 1960’s stories from Channel Light describe the seasonal abundance and easy accessibility of herring - and herring roe - within steps of MEHS in February, March, and April of the year.
In regards to that last line, about the largest herring caught by Mt Edgecumbe High School students being 11 1/16” long — I note here, that of the 1515 herring sampled by ADF&G in 2023, the longest was 232mm, or 9 1/8”. It was 11 years old; the oldest caught was 12.
